Why the entrance matters

The park has five ticket gates around its edges. The ticket is valid for 4 days with unlimited re-entry from any gate, so choosing the right entrance directly affects your route and where you stay.

Comparing the five entrances

  • East Gate (Wulingyuan landmark gate): the best-serviced entrance — Wulingyuan town is right outside with plenty of dining and lodging, and shuttles reach the Bailong Elevator lower station, the Ten-Mile Gallery and the Tianzishan Cableway. First choice for first visits and families.
  • South Gate (Forest Park gate): the start of Golden Whip Stream is at the gate — good for hikers and anyone planning the “Golden Whip Stream → Yuanjiajie → Tianzishan” loop.
  • West Gate (Yangjiajie gate): few visitors and almost no queues; ride the Yangjiajie Cableway up — good for in-depth visits and photography, but there is no direct public transport, so drive or hire a car.
  • North Gate (Tianzishan gate): a road bus goes directly up to the summit area here — less effort, good for seniors and children and for those wanting sunrise/sunset on the mountain.
  • Central Gate (Zimugang gate): simpler roads and facilities — only for self-driving visitors who know the park.

How to choose

  • First visit, with seniors and children: East Gate;
  • Want to hike Golden Whip Stream: South Gate;
  • Avoid crowds, see the peak walls: West Gate;
  • Save effort and go straight up: North Gate.

Private cars cannot enter the park — park outside the ticket gate and switch to the park shuttle bus.

FAQ

What are the highlights and features of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was China’s first national forest park and is the core of the Wulingyuan World Natural Heritage site. It is famed for more than three thousand quartz-sandstone pillars — “an enlarged bonsai, a miniature wonderland.” The key sights are Yuanjiajie (Hallelujah Mountain), Tianzishan (Yubi Peak), Golden Whip Stream and Huangshizhai; a visit usually takes 2–3 days.
What is the relationship between the Forest Park and Wulingyuan?
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the core of the Wulingyuan World Natural Heritage site. “Wulingyuan” generally refers to this area of peak forests — Yuanjiajie, Tianzishan, Golden Whip Stream, Yangjiajie and the Ten-Mile Gallery; visiting the Forest Park means visiting the heart of Wulingyuan.
What does the Forest Park admission include?
The admission covers entry to core areas such as the Forest Park, Tianzishan, Yangjiajie, Golden Whip Stream and the Ten-Mile Gallery; it is valid for 4 days with unlimited re-entry. In-park transport (Bailong Elevator, Tianzishan Cableway, shuttle buses) needs separate tickets.
Can I finish the Forest Park in one day?
Yes, but only the highlights. The park is large and a full visit is best over 2–3 days; for one day, focus on Yuanjiajie + Tianzishan.
