Where to stay

Where you stay directly affects daily access and commuting. For a forest-park-focused trip, Wulingyuan town is the best bet.

The four main areas

  • Wulingyuan town (near the East Gate): the best-serviced area, with everything from chain hotels to budget guesthouses just a walk from the East Gate, plus dining, supermarkets and pharmacies — the top choice for most visitors.
  • Near the South Gate: mostly guesthouses and small/mid-size hotels; you can enter Golden Whip Stream first thing in the morning — good for those using only the South Gate route and wanting quiet.
  • Zhangjiajie downtown: near the train station and airport for easy arrival and departure, but the round trip to the park is about 40–60 minutes each way — suits trips with other plans or overnight transfers.
  • Tianzishan town (near the North Gate): high and quiet; suits the “enter from the North Gate straight to the summit, descend the next day” plan and photographers chasing sunrise/sunset; lodging is mostly guesthouses.

Choosing and booking

  • In peak season (summer, holidays) well-located stays sell out — book early;
  • Before booking, check the real distance from the stay to the ticket gate on a map — “near the park” is not always accurate;
  • Read reviews from the last 1–3 months for the real service and cleanliness;
  • If you need station pickup or luggage storage, confirm by phone in advance;
  • In-park lodging is limited and pricey, so most visitors stay in Wulingyuan or downtown and re-enter the next day with the 4-day ticket.

FAQ

What are the highlights and features of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was China’s first national forest park and is the core of the Wulingyuan World Natural Heritage site. It is famed for more than three thousand quartz-sandstone pillars — “an enlarged bonsai, a miniature wonderland.” The key sights are Yuanjiajie (Hallelujah Mountain), Tianzishan (Yubi Peak), Golden Whip Stream and Huangshizhai; a visit usually takes 2–3 days.
What is the relationship between the Forest Park and Wulingyuan?
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the core of the Wulingyuan World Natural Heritage site. “Wulingyuan” generally refers to this area of peak forests — Yuanjiajie, Tianzishan, Golden Whip Stream, Yangjiajie and the Ten-Mile Gallery; visiting the Forest Park means visiting the heart of Wulingyuan.
What does the Forest Park admission include?
The admission covers entry to core areas such as the Forest Park, Tianzishan, Yangjiajie, Golden Whip Stream and the Ten-Mile Gallery; it is valid for 4 days with unlimited re-entry. In-park transport (Bailong Elevator, Tianzishan Cableway, shuttle buses) needs separate tickets.
Can I finish the Forest Park in one day?
Yes, but only the highlights. The park is large and a full visit is best over 2–3 days; for one day, focus on Yuanjiajie + Tianzishan.
