Near the park entrance

Around the Wulingyuan entrances (East Gate / Yangjiajie / Tianzishan, etc.) hotels and guesthouses cluster tightly, with easy food, shopping and free movement — the first choice for most visitors.

  • Pros: restaurants, supermarkets and transport all at hand, with a wide price range;
  • Good for: families, multi-day trips and anyone who wants to return to rest each day.

On the mountain (inside the park)

In-park lodging (around Yuanjiajie or Tianzishan) is scarce and pricier, but close to the viewpoints, handy for dawn cloud seas and sunrises.

  • Pros: no daily entry/exit time or cableway queues;
  • Good for: photographers, sunrise/cloud-sea chasers and slow travellers;
  • Note: few rooms — book ahead; food options are also limited.

How to choose

  • First visit with children or seniors: stay near the entrance for convenience;
  • Here to shoot: spend a night on the mountain to target the sunrise;
  • On a budget: stay in Wulingyuan town just outside the entrance and walk or shuttle in.

FAQ

What are the highlights and features of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was China’s first national forest park and is the core of the Wulingyuan World Natural Heritage site. It is famed for more than three thousand quartz-sandstone pillars — “an enlarged bonsai, a miniature wonderland.” The key sights are Yuanjiajie (Hallelujah Mountain), Tianzishan (Yubi Peak), Golden Whip Stream and Huangshizhai; a visit usually takes 2–3 days.
What is the relationship between the Forest Park and Wulingyuan?
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the core of the Wulingyuan World Natural Heritage site. “Wulingyuan” generally refers to this area of peak forests — Yuanjiajie, Tianzishan, Golden Whip Stream, Yangjiajie and the Ten-Mile Gallery; visiting the Forest Park means visiting the heart of Wulingyuan.
What does the Forest Park admission include?
The admission covers entry to core areas such as the Forest Park, Tianzishan, Yangjiajie, Golden Whip Stream and the Ten-Mile Gallery; it is valid for 4 days with unlimited re-entry. In-park transport (Bailong Elevator, Tianzishan Cableway, shuttle buses) needs separate tickets.
Can I finish the Forest Park in one day?
Yes, but only the highlights. The park is large and a full visit is best over 2–3 days; for one day, focus on Yuanjiajie + Tianzishan.
