What to see in Yuanjiajie

Yuanjiajie has the densest and most bizarre peak forest in the park and is an Avatar filming location. Highlights:

  • Hallelujah Mountain (Qiankun Pillar): a solitary spire towering into the sky, the inspiration for the film’s floating mountain;
  • The First Bridge Under Heaven: two peaks joined by a natural stone bridge about 350 m above the valley floor;
  • Mihun Terrace: overlooks an array of peaks, most spectacular at sunrise with the sea of clouds.

Getting there

The fastest way: enter at the Wulingyuan landmark gate → Shuizhaosi → ride the Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie (about 2 minutes), then walk between the viewing platforms. You can also arrive from Tianzishan on foot or by shuttle bus.

Photography

  • Best early morning and right after rain, when mist drifts among the peaks;
  • Use a wide angle for big scenes and a medium telephoto to compress the layers; mind the railings for safety.

FAQ

What are the highlights and features of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was China’s first national forest park and is the core of the Wulingyuan World Natural Heritage site. It is famed for more than three thousand quartz-sandstone pillars — “an enlarged bonsai, a miniature wonderland.” The key sights are Yuanjiajie (Hallelujah Mountain), Tianzishan (Yubi Peak), Golden Whip Stream and Huangshizhai; a visit usually takes 2–3 days.
How should I arrange Yuanjiajie, Tianzishan and Golden Whip Stream?
The classic combo is “Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie, shuttle to Tianzishan, Tianzishan Cableway down,” covering the two biggest areas in one day; Golden Whip Stream is flat and good for an easy hike on another day.
Yuanjiajie or Tianzishan — which is more worth seeing?
Both are highlights: Yuanjiajie for the shaped peaks of “Hallelujah Mountain” and the First Bridge Under Heaven, Tianzishan for Yubi Peak and wide panoramas over the sea of clouds. If time is tight, visit both (link them with the elevator up and the cableway down); if you must pick one, choose Yuanjiajie for dramatic peaks or Tianzishan for open cloud-sea views.
What does the Forest Park admission include?
The admission covers entry to core areas such as the Forest Park, Tianzishan, Yangjiajie, Golden Whip Stream and the Ten-Mile Gallery; it is valid for 4 days with unlimited re-entry. In-park transport (Bailong Elevator, Tianzishan Cableway, shuttle buses) needs separate tickets.
