What to see at Huangshizhai

Huangshizhai (Yellow Stone Fort) is the largest mesa-style summit viewing platform in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and is known as “Zhangjiajie’s finest scene.” From the top you look out in all directions over thousands of sandstone pillars, especially magnificent when the sea of clouds rolls in.

  • Zhaixing Terrace: a viewing platform right on the cliff edge with the widest panorama;
  • Five Fingers Peak: five stone peaks standing shoulder to shoulder like an open hand;
  • Golden Turtle in the Sea of Mist and Liuqi Pavilion: classic viewpoints along the summit loop trail.

How to get up

Ride the Huangshizhai Cableway up (about 5 minutes), or hike up from the Forest Park gate — the full stone-step climb takes about 1.5 hours. The summit loop trail is about 2 km and gentle; walking and sightseeing takes about 2 hours.

Photography and timing

  • The sea of clouds is most likely in the early morning and right after rain — enter as soon as the park opens;
  • The loop trail has front- and back-hill sections; the front-hill platforms are clustered and yield the best shots;
  • It is windy at the top — bring a jacket.

FAQ

What are the highlights and features of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was China’s first national forest park and is the core of the Wulingyuan World Natural Heritage site. It is famed for more than three thousand quartz-sandstone pillars — “an enlarged bonsai, a miniature wonderland.” The key sights are Yuanjiajie (Hallelujah Mountain), Tianzishan (Yubi Peak), Golden Whip Stream and Huangshizhai; a visit usually takes 2–3 days.
What does the Forest Park admission include?
The admission covers entry to core areas such as the Forest Park, Tianzishan, Yangjiajie, Golden Whip Stream and the Ten-Mile Gallery; it is valid for 4 days with unlimited re-entry. In-park transport (Bailong Elevator, Tianzishan Cableway, shuttle buses) needs separate tickets.
Can I finish the Forest Park in one day?
Yes, but only the highlights. The park is large and a full visit is best over 2–3 days; for one day, focus on Yuanjiajie + Tianzishan.
What is the relationship between the Forest Park and Wulingyuan?
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is the core of the Wulingyuan World Natural Heritage site. “Wulingyuan” generally refers to this area of peak forests — Yuanjiajie, Tianzishan, Golden Whip Stream, Yangjiajie and the Ten-Mile Gallery; visiting the Forest Park means visiting the heart of Wulingyuan.
