Is winter worth it?
Many assume winter is a poor time to visit the Forest Park, but in fact crowds thin out, the air is crisp, and after snow the peaks are dressed in white with rime thick on the branches — a quiet, majestic beauty that suits those who love calm and photography.
What to see
- Rime and snow: when low temperatures meet abundant moisture, pine branches and peaks are coated in ice crystals;
- Peaks and the sea of clouds: the atmosphere is stable in winter, and on clear mornings the sea of clouds is quite likely;
- Quiet and uncrowded: with the peak season over, the platforms and trails are far more relaxed.
Travel tips
- Summit temperatures can drop below freezing — wear a down jacket, hat and gloves, and grippy shoes;
- Trails and steps may freeze — walk slowly, hold the handrails and use shoe spikes if needed;
- Cableways and the elevator may be suspended for strong wind or ice — subject to the park’s notice, so leave your itinerary flexible;
- It gets dark early — enter early and head back early to avoid being stranded on the mountain at night.
